Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed as a young little girl. This forced her mother to help support her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. But she quit school after just two years of school to take on a acting career. It was a difficult path to follow. Even though she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine, no theatre jobs were offered to her. While in New York, she worked at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. It was there that she was able to earn a living working as an usherette during the in the daytime, while at night she performed with the New England Repertory Company.
